Our one question: can you take it?
Hey fam, Myra here.
We’ve been hard at work on our first indie episodes. And when we say work — we mean, like, really digging into WHAT this podcast is. Because let’s be real — we started in public media. Homegoings was originally produced by Vermont Public. That’s how this show came to life, so I’m grateful, of course, AND: there are tropes that come along with the public media world. You likely know some. The “radio voice,” the “appropriate” topics… i.e. the inescapable proximity to whiteness. I’ll be honest, it’s been hard to undo some of those habits and dig back into sounding and feeling like — me! And I want to sound like me. This show has my name on it, dammit!
So I called a friend. Well, more like a friend/mentor/fellow indie show-runner Nichole Hill. She runs the show “Our Ancestors Were Messy” and she was like — “Why don’t I just interview you about you?” And I was like… don’t threaten me with a good time! So we hopped on Zoom and did just that.
And it was a little nerve-wracking! I’m usually the one asking the questions, right? But I think it worked.
The big takeaway from our conversation? I seek to make something beautiful out of something painful. And I don’t mean wrap everything up in a tidy bow. I also don’t mean let’s just sit in our trauma for hours. I like to process people’s experiences, somatically almost, until we get to either a point of reflection about the lessons learned, or we’ve both learned something new. Because otherwise… What’s the point of going through it?
People are complicated. People’s stories are complicated. And a providing a space where we can have a conversation about something quite upsetting and try to reframe it, or unpack it is what we offer here on this show.
All we ask is: can you take it? If so, then let’s go there—together. Check out our trailer above (or below!)
Our podcast feed is officially live, so go subscribe, and keep an ear out for our first full-length episode, which we’ll release very soon!
